Bentonite is a clay consisting essentially of minerals of the smectite group (although it may contain other clays in smaller quantities). This clay has the distinct ability to swell and increase in volume when in contact with water, which gives it unique properties and makes it valuable for numerous industrial applications. Bentonite can be mainly of two types, depending on its ionic content: calcium bentonite and sodium bentonite.
